Andover Glen Summer Picnic on the way in August

By Debra Jones

You’ll definitely want to circle the date on your calendar now of Saturday August 29th for the annual Andover Glen Summer Picnic right in our very own Andover Glen Park. The food, fun and festivities will begin at 1:00 p.m.  The Association will be providing a BBQ along with soda, bottled water, paper plates, silverware and napkins.  We would like the homeowners with odd house numbers to bring your favorite salad and the homeowners with even numbers to bring your favorite dessert.  We are unable to offer alcoholic beverages, but you are allowed to bring your favorite alcoholic drinks on your own.  So grab your lawn chairs and come enjoy an afternoon in your park with your neighbors.  The “Spiff Awards” will be presented at the Picnic this year, along with other fun prizes.  If it just happens to rain on our picnic, we will have the picnic on Saturday, September 12th, same time - same place. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Debra at debsew79@msn.com. ~

Plan now for disposing of your unwanted Household Chemicals in September

By Randy Simpson

Are you moving, recently renovated your house, or have car projects? Do you have products such as pesticides, paint, automotive products, household cleaners or other items that can be considered household hazardous waste?

Household Chemicals continued on page 3…

Household Chemicals from page 2…

Not sure what to do with them? Attend the Household Chemical Roundup and safely and efficiently recycle or dispose of those items that can be harmful to people, pets and the environment -- or just difficult to get rid of.

The roundup normally occurs on the second Saturday in September The next event is scheduled for:

September 12 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Aurora Central Facilities, 13645 E. Ellsworth Ave. – one block north of Alameda and Potomac.

Bolting Broccoli and Red Tomatoes—Community Garden Update

By Lynn Walton

Yes, it’s true – the broccoli has bolted.  But we have had more successes than disappointments (I hate to call them failures) and the AG gardeners are making bi-weekly harvest trips.  At any given time you might see someone walking down Layton Drive with lettuces, squashes, onions, and a few peas tucked into their pockets.  Tomatoes promise to follow soon – those clever folks who used Walls-O-Water now have red tomatoes on the vine.  If you attend the AG picnic on August 29th, please go and see the watermelons and pumpkins growing along the fence.  Do you know of any kids who would like to visit the garden and see what’s growing?  Call Lynn at 720-379-4616 and she’ll show them the garden.

The Andover Glen Community Garden at Andover Glen Park is only in its first season but already promises bountiful harvests for years to come. If you didn’t participate this season, some space is available for next year!

Now is the time to start thinking about what to do with the harvest.  Do you want to learn how to preserve tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers (think dill pickles), and other garden delectable’s?  If you’re interested in canning, freezing, parboiling or drying harvested produce, please call Lynn at 720-379-4616. ~

What do you think about Recreational opportunities in Aurora?

By Randy Simpson

A new task force has been authorized by the Aurora City Council. Known as the ARRTF (Aurora Residents for Recreation Taskforce), it was created to assess community needs for recreation services and facilities in the city of Aurora and create a set of recommendations to City Council to successfully address the

identified needs of Aurora's residents.

The task force needs you to get involved in making our community the best place for children, families and businesses to locate and thrive.

The Recreation Task Force is committed to engaging the entire Aurora community in a dialog that will result in a complete assessment of our community's recreation needs.  For more information on this recreation task force and to take a survey on your opinion of the recreational opportunities in our city, please go to ARRTF website at www.arrtf.org. ~

Leave all the afternoon for exercise and recreation, which are as necessary as reading. I will rather say more necessary because health is worth more than learning.
