After a May planting, a Busy June Ahead for Andover Glen

By Debra Jones

We had a successful main entry planting day   on Tuesday, May 9th as a group of AG volunteer homeowners gathered with shovels, rakes and wheelbarrows.  They all dug in, planting shrubs and hauling mulch. Some annuals will follow after frost danger is over.  Special thanks to all who took the time to make Andover Glen look so nice.  Thanks go to: Jennifer Vaughn and her children Ashley, Zachery, and Amanda, Bob Meyer, Ron Adams, and Quink and Norm Arlt.

Great Results really show in Entry Planting

And coming up in June…

Xeriscape Project & Cleanup Workday, June 10th

On Saturday, June 10th, there will a workday for the Xeriscape project for which our neighborhood received a grant from the City of Aurora. The project will get underway at 10 a.m. and there will be refreshments served.  Volunteers are needed.  Please contact Ron Adams at 303-248-6213 if you’d like to help out.

Garage Sale Weekend, June 16th & 17th

Our annual Andover Glen Garage Sale is set once again for Father's Day weekend, Friday, June 16th and Saturday, June 17th from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  This is a good time to get "under-stuffed" and go through the basement, garage and of course the closets and get rid of those unwanted items.  This event is well advertised and is well attended with lots of eager buyers.  So if you plan to have a garage sale, please have your items out on your driveway early, as the buyers come out early.

Dumpster Days, June 23rd-25th

We are going to have a large roll-off dumpster available Friday, June 23rd  through Sunday, June 25th.  This will be the perfect time to dispose of those unwanted items you didn't sell at the garage sale or those hard to get rid of items from around your house.  Just remember that the dumpster is for Andover Glen homeowners only and is paid for by your Association Dues.   If you have large tree branches and bushes to dispose of, please cut them down to smaller pieces to fit into the dumpster.  No toxic wastes like old paint, oil, batteries, tires, etc. are allowed.  Please wait for the City of Aurora Household Chemical Roundup in September for those items.  Also, please do not overfill the dumpster.

“Dumpster Days”, From page 1

Once the dumpster is full we will put a sign on it and no other items will be allowed.  Last year we had a dumpster that was too full and we had to pay for an additional dumpster.  If the waste management company cannot cover the dumpster, they will not take it.  When this happens we all have to pay for it, so please, please do not overfill it.  We are planning another dumpster in the fall.  Your cooperation in following these rules will allow us to continue this program in the future. If you have any questions about any of these activities, my e-mail address is debsew79@msn.com

Annual Assessments Due July 1st

By Jan Guerra

At the Board’s May meeting budget requirements for the next fiscal year (7/1/06-6/30/07) were discussed and a proposed budget formulated.  After reviewing the budget, the Board voted to keep the assessment at $321.00.  While this is the sixth straight year the dues have remained at $321, we suspect it may be the last.

Rising costs for maintaining the common area (water, landscaping) and additional costs related to SB100 (financial reviews/audits by a CPA, web site fees) have already put the anticipated expenses for next year over anticipated income.  This is despite a more aggressive investment approach designed to yield additional interest on our investments.  For next year the projected difference between expenses and income is approximately $1500.  If actual expenses do exceed income, the difference will be funded by reserves.  Continued use of reserves will eventually require a rise in the annual assessment in future years.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Norm Arlt once again for personally holding down costs for our association.  Many of you do not realize that Norm’s volunteer work saves this association a great deal of money!  Without his efforts, much of the work he does would have to be contracted out - at significant expense! - Thanks Norm!

A Few Trimming Tips…

By Norm Arlt

Here are a few friendly reminders to keep in mind while you are out trimming and spiffing up your yard:
Sidewalk Clearance:  The City of Aurora Landscape Code requires that all bushes, trees, and other plantings must be cut back at least six inches from the sidewalk to clear the walkway.  Tree branches must not be lower than 8 feet over sidewalks.  These things have a way of sneaking up on you over the years. Inspect your trees, bushes, and shrubs to make certain they are trimmed to adhere to City Code.
Annual Trimming: It's much better for the plants to have minor maintenance trimming each year, rather than monster pillaging every 5 or 10 years (for an example of the latter, take a look at the junipers alongside the creek spillway/walkway in the park).  Sooner or later, the city will come along and require the trimming, so it really is best to keep ahead of them.
Bundling: When you do trim bushes and trees back, it’s a very good practice to cut then into shorter lengths and bundle them together with twine or bungling wire.  It makes it neater and easier for the trash hauler to pick them up from your property.

Following these simple tips can make your trees, bushes, and overall property look better and also much easier to keep them looking their best year after year.

Play it safe with Birds

By Bob Meyer

Just when we thought it was safe to go out….we have a reminder from the state health and agriculture officials that West Nile virus will soon be among us as mosquito larvae begin to hatch.  If we see a bird that is ill or dead, we are asked to phone this number (877-462-2911), staffed seven days a week.  The virus kills crows, ravens, magpies, and jays.

West Nile is tough.  Just speak with anyone who has had it-- so don’t forget the DEET when you go out.

Be aware that migratory waterfowl may carry the H5N1 bird flu virus.  In the near-two hundred human cases recorded so far, over fifty percent have been fatal.  Over 200 million domestic fowl have been destroyed because of this disease, causing huge economic losses.  So far, these cases have been limited to Asia and Europe.  There is no way to predict if or when it may visit us.  We are requested to call the above number if we observe cases of dead or sick waterfowl.

We may only stay alert to these dangers and take action when warranted.  Good luck.

Next Meeting reminder:

The next AG board meeting is open to all AG Association members and will be held at Shalom Park on Wednesday, June 21st at 7 p.m.
