Get Ready for a Busy Spring and Summer in Andover Glen
There are several events over the next few months that will keep things busy here in our neighborhood:
Main Entry Flower Planting, May9th
On Tuesday, May 9th, beginning around noon we will be working on the landscaping at the main entryway. Volunteers are needed! We will be planting flowers, bushes and ground cover. Call Quink Arlt at 303-766-7344 if you’re interested in helping!
Xeriscape Project & Cleanup Workday, June 10th
On Saturday, June 10th, there will a workday for the Xeriscape project for which our neighborhood received a grant from the City of Aurora. (see article on page 4 of this Gazette) Volunteers are needed. Please contact Ron Adams at 303-248-6213 if you’d like to help out.
Garage Sale Weekend, June 16th & 17th
Our annual Andover Glen Garage Sale is set once again for Father's Day weekend, Friday, June 16th and Saturday, June 17th from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This is a good time to get "under-stuffed" and go through the basement, garage and of course the closets and get rid of those unwanted items. This event is well advertised and is well attended with lots of eager buyers. So if you plan to have a garage sale, please have your items out on your driveway early, as the buyers come out early.
Dumpster Days, June 23rd-25th
We are going to have a large roll-off dumpster available Friday, June 23rd through Sunday, June 25th. This will be the perfect time to dispose of those unwanted items you didn't sell at the garage sale or those hard to get rid of items from around your house. Just remember that the dumpster is for Andover Glen homeowners only and is paid for by your Association Dues. We would like to ask all of the homeowners to please be considerate of others and not to take advantage of it! If you have large tree branches and bushes to dispose of, please cut them down to smaller pieces to fit into the dumpster. This will allow for more items to fit into the dumpster. The dumpster fills up very quickly and we would like everyone to have a chance to put items into the dumpster. No toxic wastes like old paint, oil, batteries, tires, etc. are allowed. Please wait for the City of Aurora Household Chemical Roundup in September for those items. Also, please do not overfill the dumpster. Once the dumpster is full we will put a sign on it and no other items will be allowed. Last year we had a dumpster that was too full and we had to pay for an additional dumpster. If the waste management company cannot cover the dumpster, they will not take it. When this happens we all have to pay for it, so please, please do not overfill it. We are planning another dumpster in the fall. Your cooperation in following these rules will allow us to continue this program in the future. If you have any questions about any of these activities, my e-mail address is debsew79@msn.com.
Things have been quiet for a couple of months here in Andover Glen, so thanks to all for being vigilant and watchful. The only incident of note is that we did recently have a car stolen from one of our neighbors living on E. Layton Dr.
The theft happened in the early evening to a vehicle parked at curbside in front of the owner’s home. No recovery has been made so far, and none is really expected.
Police do not devote much time to stolen vehicles anymore because they are usually run through a “chop shop” very soon after being taken. They also can be on their way to becoming a “Tijuana Taxi” and you would probably not want that one back.
What can we do to prevent auto theft? There are several suggestions:
Following these simple rules will prevent a great many auto thefts from ever occurring. We just need to be a bit more cautious and not make an easy mark of ourselves. There is nothing illegal about making the crooks work a little harder for their dough, and hopefully be completely frustrated here in Andover Glen!
Prevention is better than
cure.

Spring has sprung, and isn’t it great? Raking leaves is way easier than heaving snowdrifts, and flowers beat icicles any day.
Our Spiff contest is under way again this year and emphasis will be on roofs and fences. There are lots of benefits to replacing that shingle job, especially if it is getting a case of the “wolf-lip”. Sooner or later it may begin to leak, and we don’t want that. Insurance companies will give nice reductions for non-flammable materials, thus helping us to recover a substantial amount of cost over several years. With oil prices going up, the inventories of less expensive roofing materials will soon be sold, thus probably raising future expenses.
Fences may become water-stained, soiled or just plain rickety. Many times, a quick power wash and staining will fix things. I took a few steps back for a critical glance at mine, and, yup---Home Depot and Lowes—here I come. Even fifty bucks would go a long way in this league, especially if you can borrow a power washer from one of your good neighbors!
Some ambitious Andover Glen citizens have already started their projects and we appreciate their good efforts:
· We have new brickwork replacing railroad ties at 14164 E. Layton Dr., with exterior wood stain and treatment on the way. Thanks, Carl and Mary.
· A new paint job has brightened 4873 S. Crystal St. Thanks, Steve and Linda.
We are looking forward to another season of Spiffin’up the Glen, to keep our neighborhood looking better than ever and one of Aurora’s best!

The City of Aurora has awarded Andover Glen a $1000 xeriscaping grant. Including this grant, Andover Glen has received over $12,000 in grant funds over the last several years.
We will be using this grant to install drip irrigation for the shrubs along the Parker Road right of way. The grant requires us to match the cash with volunteer work hours. The volunteers will lay out and connect the 1/4 " tubing to each plant from connectors on our irrigation system, and cover them with mulch. No plumbing skills required, but good knees for kneeling would be helpful. You might want to bring shovels, heavy-duty scissors, wheelbarrows, and rakes. You won't have to plan on getting wet unless it rains.
We will be combining this volunteer activity with a general spring cleanup day for the Andover Glen park and right-of-way, with special emphasis on adding mulch where it has thinned over the years, in addition to general trimming and trash pickup.
Don't worry if you weren't able to sign up for the official volunteer list on our grant application. Just let Ron Adams know that you are coming, and contact him at 303-248-6213 if you have any questions.
Friendly Reminder…
Don’t forget that for any exterior work on your home this spring and summer such as painting, roofing, etc., that an Architectural Change Request is required to be submitted and approved. They are available on the web at www.andoverglen.org or call Anne Stellmon at 303-699-8567.
